The German A61 motorway leading from the Hockenheim junction to the border with the Netherlands is a traffic route carrying a particularly high number of heavy goods vehicles. The enormous axle loads of HGV traffic had caused deep rutting on the right-hand lane which now was in need of rehabilitation. Landesbetrieb Straßen und Verkehr Montabaur, the authority in charge of the road network in the area, was soon convinced of the “hot on hot” paving method’s advantages and awarded a contract for rehabilitation of a motorway section using the VÖGELE “InLine Pave” technology.
In view of the high traffic load, rehabilitation of the right-hand lane was to be carried out to a very high standard of quality while keeping the period scheduled for roadworks as short as possible. A kind of job for which “InLine Pave” is just the right thing. So Landesbetrieb Straßen und Verkehr Montabaur awarded the contract for pavement rehabilitation on the section between Mutterstadt and Ludwigshafen junctions using the VÖGELE “InLine Pave” train to the two building companies Faber and Matthäi.
Pavement rehabilitation in single-lane width
“InLine Pave” is particularly suited to pavement rehabilitation in single-lane width. Thanks to the compact-size machines, rehabilitation work can be carried out in widths from 3m onwards while the traffic keeps flowing on the adjacent lane. This was a crucial factor on the A61, as disruption to traffic on this very busy motorway could be kept to an absolute minimum. In addition, the compact-size machines allowed ample clearance between passing vehicles and the paving train, thus making a valuable contribution to both safer driving and higher safety for roadworkers on site.
With the “InLine Pave” train, the whole process of paving takes place in a line. Binder and surface courses are placed “hot on hot” by machines working one immediately after the other. This method also allows asphalt to be paved in colder weather as the temperature in the package of binder and surface courses drops much slower compared to conventional paving in single layers. As a consequence, compacting results are better and the window of time available for compaction extends.
Rehabilitation in record time of just 3 days
Rehabilitation operations on the A 61 motorway could be completed in record time. Binder and wearing courses of the right-hand lane were removed and new layers paved over a distance of 3km, 4.5m wide, in a single pass. Two WIRTGEN W 2000 milling machines had removed the deformed pavement before, on the next day, the VÖGELE “InLine Pave” machines set to work. Asphalt paving „hot on hot“ was completed after just 3 working days. Using the conventional method would have required a minimum of 5 days.
Saving of time convinced authority letting the contract
Especially the saving of time resulting from the new VÖGELE “InLine Pave” technology when paving “hot on hot” was a crucial advantage over the conventional method when it came to letting the contract for pavement rehabilitation on the A61 motorway. The fact that also prime pavement quality is reliably achieved due to optimal interlocking of binder and surface courses and an excellent bond of layers finally tipped the scales in favour of “hot on hot” paving.
