At Bauma 2007 in Munich, Germany, Mannheim-based VÖGELE AG will present two new compact class pavers, SUPER 1100-2 and SUPER 1300-2. In particular, this new class stands out by its very compact design and extremely powerful traction. The SUPER 1300-2's maximum pave width of 4.5m demonstrates the high power, unattained until now in this class.

In spite of their compact design, both machines offer all the crucial features which construction companies value on the large machines made by VÖGELE. Excellent steering and handling, clean feed with mix and reliable conveyance and spreading, that is "typically VÖGELE" for example. Also regarding handling, since they are equipped as standard with ErgoPlus, the user-friendly concept for paver operation, the two newcomers are in every way equal to the high-range equipment. Naturally, VÖGELE have also developed a new screed, the AB 340, perfectly adapted to the pave widths and laydown rates of the two new machines.

Small size, high efficiency

In both models, no protruding edge sticks out of the slender silhouette. And with their compact length of just 5m, manoeuvring and operating is extremely easy even in tight corners. When the hopper sides are folded in, the overall width of both compact pavers is reduced to just 1.8m so they can easily get through narrow alleys or entrances to the construction site.

Under the hood, electronically controlled DEUTZ engines deliver an output of 56kW (SUPER 1100-2) or 65kW (SUPER 1300-2) so that both machines have power to spare for any task. The efficient insulation reduces engine noise emission to a minimum. In the economical ECO mode, which is sufficient for many paving applications, the engines run still quieter while consuming less fuel. As usual with VÖGELE, also in the new compact class, engine output is translated into tractive effort with excellent efficiency through powerful separate hydraulic drives.

First applications furnish proof: The new compact size pavers launched by VÖGELE – such as SUPER 1300-2 with AB 340 Extending Screed in TV version seen here - produce high pavement quality and feature maximum ease of operation.

Clever feed

In spite of their slender silhouette, the material hoppers of both new machines can hold 10 tonnes of mix. Thanks to a very amply dimensioned conveyor tunnel, to conveyors for which proportional control is provided and powerful augers, SUPER 1300-2 yields laydown rates up to 350 tonnes/h and SUPER 1100-2 up to 300 tonnes/h. But the new compact class has more to offer: to allow for shock-free docking of feed vehicles, both machines are equipped with oscillating push-rollers. When paving close to obstacles or walls, the paver operator can, at the push of a button, fold up hydraulically the hopper side concerned without disturbing the conveyance of mix. Automatic monitoring of the mix level in the auger tunnel provides for a constant head of mix in front of the screed.

In the course of test applications, the paving team of German contractor Oscar Vogel based in Eimelding/Baden recognized very rapidly the many practical benefits offered by the new compact pavers. The hopper sides folding separately, for example, increased the paver’s efficiency considerably as it paved asphalt on a 2.3km long footpath and cycle path along a number of walls. Jürgen Roth, technical director of the family business, summarized his impression of the new machine with the following words: "The SUPER 1300-2 is simply super!". Such or similar comments were repeated by other companies which have examined one of the new pavers very thoroughly in the course of in-depth tests when paving in narrow city streets, twisty squares, or on curvy and steep farm tracks.

Mannheim-based VÖGELE AG is a trendsetter once more, now with their compact size pavers SUPER 1100-2 and SUPER 1300-2. The pavers stand out through compact design, narrow track gauge and a host of useful details such as a hydraulic hopper front or a hardtop with wide sunshades.

Best grades for handling

The paver operator’s stand gives an unobstructed view of the paver’s auger tunnel and an excellent overview of the job site. All-round visibility is one of the features of ErgoPlus, the concept for easy paver handling, that earned much praise. Vital components of ErgoPlus are the sturdy operating consoles provided with large displays, water-proof push-buttons and a clear arrangements of controls for paver functions into logical groups. The Memory feature increases efficiency. Prior to a move of the paver on site, it stores last settings for paver functions and these are retrieved immediately after the move when paving is resumed. Another strong point of ErgoPlus is the hardtop of glass fibre reinforced polymer material. It gives shelter to the operator whether rain or shine and folds down within seconds for transport of the paver.

But not only handling the machines is easy thanks to ErgoPlus, perfect paving, too, is child’s play due to NIVELTRONIC® Plus, the new system for automated grade and slope control. Provided with self-explanatory symbols neutral in language, this cutting-edge VÖGELE system is very easy to learn. All sensors connected to the paver are recognized automatically by NIVELTRONIC® Plus. Sensors can be monitored and controlled from the scewmen’s consoles on either side of the screed.

"Handling is as easy as with the large pavers", this is Christian Pontiggia’s comment on the SUPER 1300-2 with ErgoPlus. Pontiggia, owner of a firm specialized in civil engineering and road construction, has relied on VÖGELE pavers for years. He is owner of a SUPER 1800-2 and appreciates the advantages of ErgoPlus such as, for example, the seat and control desk adjustable exactly in keeping with the operator’s personal needs or the compartments to stow away things which helps keep the machine in good order. He and his team never want to do without this gain in comfort and safety, no matter whether it is large or compact equipment.

Ideal Match: AB 340 Extending Screed

The new AB 340 Extending Screed is the perfect match for the new pavers. The screed is infinitely variable from 1.8m to 3.4m (SUPER 1300-2) or 3.2m (SUPER 1100-2) and builds up with bolt-on extensions to a maximum of 4.5m (SUPER 1300-2) or 4.3m (SUPER 1100-2). Pave width can also be reduced to just 75cm.

The screed in its basic version comes with vibrators (for SUPER 1100-2) but is also available with tamper and vibrators (for SUPER 1300-2). For electric screed heating, a modern three-phase A.C. generator with generator management is installed. Generator output is controlled as a function of pave width and screed heating periods are short.

The economical tracked pavers in the new compact equipment class of VÖGELE are the ideal option for minor roads or squares, farm tracks or combined footpaths and cycle paths.
