Made of high quality components, SUPER 1603-2, the new wheeled VÖGELE mid-range paver, stands out through efficiency and performance at the highest level. A particular highlight is the possibility of combining this paver with a high compaction screed. The VÖGELE newcomer is powered by a 4-cylinder PERKINS engine rated at 100kW featuring very low noise levels, environmentally friendly design and economical operation.
High mobility and excellent manoeuvrability
Typical of wheeled VÖGELE pavers, the SUPER 1603-2 boasts high mobility and excellent manoeuvrability, due not least to its small outside turning radius of just 6.5m. This renders the SUPER 1603-2 a highly versatile machine suited to handle most varied paving applications. The spectrum of jobs ranges from farm tracks and car parks through to municipal applications or highways. The new machine’s capabilities are demonstrated by its technical data including a maximum pave width of 7m, layer thickness up to 30cm and pave speed up to 18m/min. On projects requiring frequent moves of the paver on site, the SUPER 1603-2 displays another strong point: the agile machine travels at up to 20km/h.
The only paver of its class coming with High Compaction Technology
The option to combine SUPER 1603-2 with an AB 500-2 Extending Screed in TP1 version, i.e with a screed for high compaction, makes the paver unique in its class. Coming with tamper and one pressure bar, the screed achieves unrivalled values in terms of pavement density. Performance tests conducted on a number of building sites in southern Germany showed that SUPER 1603-2 easily faces up to comparison with bigger machines. On the B14 federal highway, the paving team of contractor Eurovia’s Remmingen-based branch paved all layers of the newly built road pavement, 6.5m wide, by making use of high compaction technology. Dieter Keck, head of the contractor’s paving crew and used to working with far bigger pavers, was highly satisfied with the pavement’s quality, its degree of density and the paver’s operating speed.
Intuitive handling with ErgoPlus
Also unique in the market is ErgoPlus, the new concept for intuitive paver handling. ErgoPlus launched by VÖGELE is on board every SUPER 1603-2 supplied to clients. ErgoPlus encompasses an ergonomically designed operator’s stand, modern operating consoles for paver operator and screwmen, NIVELTRONIC® Plus, the new system for automated grade and slope control and a hardtop made of glass fibre reinforced polymer material.
ErgoPlus allows intuitive handling of the SUPER 1603-2 paver from the operator’s stand. With the paver operator in mind, VÖGELE clustered push-buttons on his console into logical groups according to job site requirements. Groups include functions such as feed with mix, screed, material hopper and steering. Self-explanatory symbols are provided, neutral in language. Thanks to push-buttons easily identifiable by touch and with a distinctly tanglible pressure point, the paver can be handled even "blindfold".
The comfort offered by the SUPER 1603-2 is evident as soon as the operator steps onto his platform. An ergonomical workplace can be set up in a convenient manner and compartments to stow things away help keep the machine in good order. The control desk is easily adjustable in height and tilt angle, thus allowing the operator to position the console in keeping with his height and seating position. In addition, he can swivel his seat out to the sides for an unobstructed view of the job and all hot spots on the paver. The control desk can be swivelled out together with the operator’s seat for a comfortable working position on the one hand and for high safety of the paving team on the other.
Handling is child's play: NIVELTRONIC® Plus
Handling NIVELTRONIC® Plus, the new automated system for grade and slope control, is very easy. The newly designed operating console for the screed guides the screwman through the menue. Here too, the focus is on intuitive and convenient handling. All vital functions of NIVELTRONIC® Plus are directly accessible on the first menu level, thus allowing to achieve excellent paving results in a way as easy as possible. A feature also demonstrating the high convenience offered by NIVELTRONIC® Plus is automatic recognition of sensors. All the paving team needs to do is plug in the sensors for grade and slope control, these are recognized automatically by NIVELTRONIC® Plus.
Power on board
The performance tests conducted by Remmingen-based contractor Eurovia displayed the high tractive power transmitted by the PERKINS engine (100kW) to the paver’s powered wheels. Dieter Keck, head of the paving crew, was much impressed by the short time required for heating the screed’s compacting elements, a feature achieved by modern generator management.
The right temperature is always an issue, not only when it is about screeds. When working in hot climate, the paver’s large cooler assembly with innovative air routing maintains ideal temperatures for engine cooling liquid, hydraulic oil and charge air, even when working under full load at ambient temperatures up to 50 °C.
Perfect feed with mix, optimal pavement quality
In the new SUPER 1603-2, powerful separate drives are installed for conveyors and augers. They yield laydown rates up to 600 tonnes/h. To match this high performance, the paver comes with a large material hopper holding up to 13 tonnes. Conveyance and spreading of mix in front of the screed are controlled as a function of pave speed and pave width. In new generation VÖGELE pavers, continuous monitoring of conveyor and auger speeds guarantees a constant head of mix in front of the screed complying with requirements at all times.
Moreover, augers complete with bearing boxes and limiting plates for the auger tunnel are infinitely variable in height up to 20cm across the full pave width to adapt to layer thickness. This way, optimal spreading of mix is always ensured even when paving thin layers or layers of varying thickness. Auger blades of large diameter (400mm) are fitted for perfect spreading of the mix even when paving in large widths.
The tests conducted by contractor Eurovia displayed the machine’s capabilities when it comes to handling most varied kinds of paving materials. They placed crushed stone and paved mixes of various grain size for bituminous base, binder and wearing course. The outcome was always the same: layers featuring excellent compaction and highest evenness.
Maintenance further simplified
In the course of the performance tests, contractor Eurovia’s workshop staff, too, got to know the new paver. They praised the measures taken by VÖGELE to further simplify maintenance. The paver’s wide engine hood and large hinged panels give convenient access to all service points on the machine. The centralized lubrication system for conveyor and auger bearings, too, makes life much easier. Thanks to the well thought-out maintenance and service concept, this machine is going to meet greatest expectations of operational availablility at all times.
