With the SUPER 1800-2, VÖGELE carry on the long successful history of their pavers in the SUPER 1800 class. Since the end of the 1990s, some 3,000 units of the SUPER 1800 and SUPER 1800-1 models have been sold to construction companies all over the world. Following now in its predecessors’ footsteps, the new SUPER 1800-2 also boasts outstanding performance, economic operating efficiency and user friendliness. The highlights of the modern mid-range paver are ErgoPlus, the concept for easy paver handling, and a large pave width of 10m.
High performance achieved economically
The performance data are impressive: the new paver handles pave widths up to 10m, layer thickness up to 30cm, paves at speeds up to 24m/min. and achieves laydown rates up to 700 t/h. For the SUPER 1800-2’s outstanding performance, a 6-cylinder PERKINS engine is installed with a rated output of about 130 kW. The engine featuring very low noise levels already complies with exhaust emission standards COM 3a and EPA Tier III. Operating in ECO mode, sufficient for a large number of paving tasks, decreases engine noise emission, reduces fuel consumption and wear.
ErgoPlus from VÖGELE helps keep cool: even with the seat and operator’s console of the SUPER 1800-2 swivelled outwards beyond the width of the machine, the hardtop of glass fibre reinforced polymer material with wide, extending sunshades provides for optimal sun protection.
From motorway through to roundabout
For the SUPER 1800-2, three screed options are available: the SB 250 Fixed Width Screed and the AB 500-2 and AB 600 Extending Screeds, each in TV version (with tamper and vibrators) and in TP1 or TP2 versions (with tamper and 1 or 2 pressure bars). Thanks to its high tractive power, the SUPER 1800-2 gets major inner-city applications done in the same impeccable manner as it copes with construction of highways, motorways or airport runways. Thanks to the paver’s powerful separate drives for traction integrated into the sprockets of its crawler unit, the SUPER 1800-2 handles even tricky jobs such as roundabouts with ease.
ErgoPlus – the strong point of SUPER 1800-2
With ErgoPlus, the new innovative concept for paver handling, VÖGELE once again set the benchmark in operating ease. New are the ergonomical operator's platform, the modern operating consoles for paver operator and screwman and NIVELTRONIC® Plus, the new system for automated grade and slope control.
Thanks to the SUPER 1800-2’s ergonomically designed platform, a few adjustments by the operator are all it takes to position his seat and operating console exactly in keeping with his personal needs. The operator’s seat can be swivelled out to the sides beyond the width of the platform for a perfect view of all relevant points on the paver and an unobstructed all-round view of the job site. The particularity: the operator’s console can also be swivelled out together with the seat, an advantage enabling the operator to control his machine safely and with ease at all times. New, too, is the hardtop of glass fibre reinforced polymer material. Not only does it look good, it also provides for optimal operator protection whether rain or shine. The hardtop, together with the exhaust pipe, folds down with effortless ease via a manually operated hydraulic pump. This reduces the height of the SUPER 1800-2 by 70cm for easy transport.
Intuitive paver operation thanks to ErgoPlus
Thanks to ErgoPlus, the new concept for easy paver handling, the SUPER 1800-2 can be operated intuitively. The push-buttons on the operator’s console are clustered into groups according to job site requirements. On the left-hand side of the console, for instance, are accomodated controls for conveyors, augers and traction, in the middle those for screed functions and on the right-hand side controls for material hopper and steering. Push-buttons on the operator’s and the screwman’s consoles are easily identifiable by touch, allowing the paver to be set up and operated “blindfold”.
The new SUPER 1800-2 comes with proportional control for conveyors and augers to match both pave speed and pave width. Sensors are equipped to permanently monitor the head of mix in front of the screed, ensuring a constant mix level above all when paving at crossroads requiring frequent changes in pave width.
It is child's play: NIVELTRONIC® Plus
Handling of NIVELTRONIC® Plus, the new system for automated grade and slope control, can be learned quickly and is child’s play. All major NIVELTRONIC® Plus functions are located on menu level 1 for direct access - there is no easier way to achieve excellent paving results. VÖGELE also simplified set-up of the machine. Once the sensors for grade and slope are connected, no further set-up is required. All sensors plugged in are recognized automatically by NIVELTRONIC® Plus.
First jobs furnish proof of the new paver’s success in practice
With the innovative features included in the new SUPER 1800-2, VÖGELE pursued the clear objective of launching a mid-range machine capable of handling a variety of paving tasks with high efficiency, simplifying paver operation and building prime quality pavements. With the new machine, the traditional Mannheim-based paver manufacturer brilliantly achieved all these goals. Proof has already been furnished by the paver’s first applications in the field. Among the first users of the new technology was German contractor Eurovia Teerbau GmbH with its Ludwigshafen branch. Harald Klotz, operations manager at Eurovia, is in charge of the company’s equipment pool and planning. In the first few weeks he used the machine on most varied jobs. After paving 8,500m² of base, binder and wearing course on the B 291 federal highway, the SUPER 1800-2 with an AB 500-2 TV Extending Screed was on the scene on the B 9 building a carriageway up to 10m wide over a 4km section. After completion, the machine moved over to the Viernheim junction, the intersection point of the A6 and A67 motorways. On this job, Eurovia carried out pavement rehabilitation on 22,000m2.
The paving team was full of praise for the new ErgoPlus concept for paver handling right from the start. The paver operator was happy with the excellent all-round visibility his seat offered when swivelled outwards. And in the hot days of summer 2006 he enjoyed working under the paver’s hardtop with wide sunshades.
As far as feed of the paver with mix is concerned, Eurovia Teerbau praised the low and wide hopper sides and the sturdy rubber baffles permitting easy discharge of mix by feed lorries. The wide, oscillating push-rollers provide for smooth docking of the lorries free from jerks. Eurovia’s SUPER 1800-2 came with a hydraulically operated hopper front, a useful feature avoiding spills of mix when feed lorries change and ensuring complete emptying of the material hopper, there is no hand work with shovels required.
Harald Klotz, engineer at Eurovia, summed up the company’s experience with the new machine after six weeks of working: "From the technical point of view, the SUPER 1800-2 leaves nothing to be desired. All our staff were impressed by EgoPlus. The paving team learned very quickly how ErgoPlus works and were able to operate the new machine on their own right from the start. The screed operators were happy with their new consoles and the push-buttons easily identifiable by touch even when wearing work gloves." To him as operations manager, a machine’s capability of building prime quality asphalt pavements in an economical manner, right from the start, is of utmost importance – an expectation excellently fulfiled by the new SUPER 1800-2.
