The remains of a Celtic place of worship and a Roman soldiers' camp were discovered during earthworks on the new factory site in Rheingönheim. The finds show that Oberfeld was home to at least one Celtic sanctuary with tombs and probably a Roman military camp for up to 200 soldiers.
