New VÖGELE AB 600-2 Extending Screed Sets Benchmark

VÖGELE translate their "dash 2" concept, so far introduced for the pavers, also to their screeds. Later in 2005, the AB 500-2 Extending Screed had already been launched into the market, now AB 600-2 follows. The new screed handles larger pave widths. AB 600-2 with a basic width of 3m extends hydraulically up to 6m. By fitting bolt-on extensions, it reaches a maximum pave width of even 9.5m. Compared to Fixed-Width Screeds, Extending Screeds offer the benefit of higher variability on the job site when it comes to quickly adjusting the pave width to match requirements.

Powerful screed heating, monitoring unit for screed heating system

Always informed: The new VÖGELE monitoring unit for screed heating detects faults.

Larger width, more compact design, less noise - these were the main goals the VÖGELE engineers already pursued for the AB 500-2 Extending Screed, and they also achieved these goals for AB 600-2. The variable VÖGELE Extending Screeds are ideal for a great variety of applications, above all those jobs where frequent changes in width need to be made. Coming with the sturdy single-tube telescoping system, paving in varying widths is possible without conversion. The new screed's basic width is 3m and it extends hydraulically up to 6m. Bolt-on extensions, also compatible with AB 500-2, build up the screed to a maximum of 9.5. This, compared to the former model AB 600, is an increase of half a metre. Apart from its larger width, AB 600-2 comes with a number of additional innovations.

Fast electric screed heating

The electric system heats the screed's smoothing and compacting elements across the full pave width.

The electrical heating system installed in the AB 600-2 Extending Screed, for instance, has been improved in several aspects. The new screed's heating capacity hits a level which, in the previous model, could only be reached by fitting extra heating rods. Thus, the heating system installed as standard in the AB 600-2 does not call for anything extra. This was achieved primarily through optimal location of the heating elements on the screed plates which provides for uniform heat distribution. The enhanced heating capacity in conjunction with optimal insulation of the screed plates against loss of heat allows fast heating to operating temperature, so that the paver is quickly ready for operation even when working in low-temperature regions or during the colder seasons.

New screed heating monitoring system for operational availability at all times

For the new AB 600-2, VÖGELE offer a screed heating monitoring unit as an optional extra. This feature monitors each single heating rod for proper function and indicates any fault without delay. It keeps the paving team currently informed about the heating system's operating status and ensures proper operation of screed heating at all times.

Designed with practical aspects in mind

When designing the new AB 600-2 Extending Screed, the focus was on convenient handling of the range of pave widths between 5m and 6.5m, those used most frequently on job sites. Within this range of widths, no changes need to be made to augers or strike-off plates, a benefit that saves time and money. This is an advantage achieved by a 1.25m auger mounted overhung along with a strike-off plate system to match.

Compact design for user-friendliness

The new AB 600-2 Extending Screed features a very userfriendly design. The footboard, for instance, offers a larger clearance above road surface as it is fitted in a 12cm higher position. The high-mounted footboard makes it much easier for the paver operator to get on the screed and onto his platform. As an additional convenience, the two-piece footboard folds up with effortless ease for easy trucking. The screed's hinged end plates, available as an option, can be folded in behind the footboard so that the transport width of 3m is never exceeded. What is more, the screed's compact size provides to the operator unobstructed visibility of the auger tunnel. Of course, highly effective sound insulation has been a focus, too, when designing the new compact-size screed, so that noise emission is reduced to a minimum.

The compact design of the new AB 600-2 allows to easily get onto the paver platform.

Quick-fitting system for bolt-on extensions

VÖGELE further facilitated the process of fitting bolt-on extensions to increase the screed's pave width up to a maximum of 9.5m. The new screed comes with an auxiliary system which allows to precisely position in place and attach bolt-on extensions and strike-off plates. This makes fitting much easier and the time fitting takes is reduced considerably.

Deeper screed plates reduce wear

For the new AB 600-2 Extending Screed, the depth of screed plates has been inceased from 300mm to 330mm. Larger depth of the screed plates results in a flat screed planing angle and optimizes the floating of the screed. More stable floating facilitates handling for the paving team considerably. Furthermore, screed plates larger in area and a flat screed planing angle enhance the AB 600-2's wear behaviour and prolong the service lives of the screed plates.

Paving true to line and level

Thanks to a combination of crown adjustment and variable height of the screed's extending units, most varied shapes can be set up. The range of profiles paved by the screed extends from positive and negative crown (up to +5% and -2.5%) through to positive and negative gullwing shapes (M or W profiles).

Very easy: Servicing and maintenance

As it is typical of all VÖGELE paving equipment, the new Extending Screed, too, features user-friendly servicing and maintenance at the highest level. The tamper shield's design prevents asphalt from getting into the tamper area, thus eliminating the need for time-consuming cleaning. The tamper shield demounts very easily for performing maintenance services. Needless to say that all service points on the new screed are conveniently and quickly accessible. As a very service-friendly improvement, the vibrator shaft has been relocated. In the new screed, the shaft is attached to the screed frame and no longer to the screed plate. As a result, replacement of screed plates or heating rods is much easier and the time replacement takes cut considerably.
