They Have a Great Many Features in Common: New Generation Pavers

270

Modern engines standing out through low noise levels, high efficiency and eco-friendliness.

Economical drive concept

In the 4 new pavers of the SUPER 1600 and SUPER 1800 classes, powerful PERKINS engines are installed. These engines stand out through low noise levels and comply with exhaust standards COM 3a und EPA.

ECO Mode saves fuel

For efficient paver operation, three speed ranges are available (MIN, ECO Mode, MAX), which select conveniently at the push of a button. ECO Mode is sufficient for many paving appliations. Working in ECO Mode further decreases engine noise emission, reduces fuel consumption and wear. In order to ensure a constant pave speed crucial for high pavement quality, the 4 new pavers come with electronic engine management.

270

The innovative monitoring unit for the AB 500-2 screed’s heating system keeps the paving team currently informed about each heating rod's operating status.

Heating the screed takes a short time only

In order to avoid waits on site, fast heating of the screed’s compacting systems is an important aspect. The time it takes to heat the new pavers’ screeds is cut considerably – even with the engine running at idle speed – thanks to intelligent generator management. Quick heating of the new AB 500-2 Extending Screed is due not least to perfect insulation of the heating rods installed on the screed plates. As an optional extra, VÖGELE offer a monitoring unit for the AB 500-2’s heating system to immediately detect any kind of failure. This feature keeps the paving team currently informed about each single heating rod’s operating status.

Efficient cooling

In the new generation pavers, large cooler assemblies with innovative air routing are installed maintaining ideal temperatures for engine cooling liquid, hydraulic oil and charge air. Even when working at high ambient temperatures up to 50° C, the pavers always keep cool thanks to the cooler assemblies’ high efficiency.

Feed with mix made easy

The 4 new generation pavers come with material hoppers holding 13 tonnes, so that a sufficient quantity of mix is stored at all times. No problem to tide over difficult situations such as paving under bridges, for instance. A hydraulically operated hopper front available as an option avoids spills of mix when feed lorries change. It, furthermore, provides for complete emptying of the material hopper without a need for hand work with shovels.

270

Large oscillating push-rollers allow convenient and shock-free docking of feed vehicles.

Perfect conveyance and spreading of mix, prime pavement quality

The 4 new models in the “dash 2” paver family yield laydown rates between 600 and 700 tonnes/h. To achieve high productivity, a reliable and optimal material flow through the machine is crucial to get the screed perfectly supplied with mix. This is why the new pavers come with powerful separate drives for conveyors and augers. Proportional control provided for these drives guarantees a constant head of mix in front of the screed complying with requirements at all times. In other words, a quantity of mix is conveyed to the screed that always matches both pave speed and pave width.

270

Augers are infinitely variable in height up to 20cm, complete with bearing boxes and limiting plates for the auger tunnel.

Moreover, augers are infinitely variable in height across the full pave width to match the layer thickness. The benefit to users is optimal spreading of mix in front of the screed even when pave width varies or when placing thin layers. Auger blades of large diameter (400mm) are fitted for perfect spreading across large widths. And an auger tunnel, easily variable in depth, provides for an optimal flow of mix for thick layers.

270

A feature typical of VÖGELE pavers: clear arrangement and convenient access to all service points.

A typical VÖGELE feature: Easy servicing

When developing the 4 new generation pavers, a focus was on easy servicing, the feature typical of VÖGELE pavers. A wide engine hood and large hinged panels give convenient access to service points on the machine. All hydraulic pumps are attached to the transfer gearbox. Their clear arrangement and unobstructed access provide for service-friendliness at the highest level. A centralized lubrication system is installed to automatically supply grease to bearings of conveyors and augers. This service concept, implemented in all VÖGELE pavers, simplifies maintenance and cuts expenditure on training.

270

Practice-based design, clearly arranged controls, easy handling: the new ErgoPlus operating console.

A strong point: ErgoPlus

The new generation SUPER pavers come with ErgoPlus, the innovative VÖGELE concept for paver handling. ErgoPlus comprises 5 major components: an operator platform of ergonomic design, modern operating consoles for the paver operator and the screwman, the new NIVELTRONIC Plus system for grade and slope control and a well-thought-out service concept.

INTERVIEW: “Everyone got to grips with ErgoPlus after 1 to 2 hours.”

0

He is the man who kept a watchful eye on the first practical experience gained with ErgoPlus: Sven Neidig, Head of Technical Services at VÖGELE, Germany, and his team were involved in the introduction and practical testing of the new operating concept launched by VÖGELE. In this interview, he reports on how “test operators” reacted to ErgoPlus.

Mr Neidig, what preceded the development of ErgoPlus?

“Our development team first collected and systematically analysed the opinions and wishes of numerous clients on the subject of paver handling, ease of operation and clarity. This way, many valuable hints received from users could be integrated into development of the prototypes. These models led to production of a pilot series that was subjected to thorough testing on real construction sites.”

What experience did you gain in these tests?

“We provided only brief instructions. Nevertheless, all the ‘test operators’ were in a position to learn how ErgoPlus works. Personally, I’m very impressed by how well we succeeded in realizing the objective of self-explanatory operation. One simple figure is enough to illustrate the ease of operation: it used to take 1 to 2 days to become familiar with a machine. Thanks to ErgoPlus, 1 to 2 hours is all you need now. At the very most.”

So the switch to ErgoPlus caused no problems?

“ErgoPlus passed the test with flying colours: young or old, whether experienced in the handling of VÖGELE pavers or not, every ‘test operator’ got to grips with the functional principle of ErgoPlus in a very short time and was quickly familiar with its operation. It was a job to get some of them off the operator’s platform.”

What was the most convincing innovation?

“The Touch-and-Work principle is fantastic. Touch-and-Work enables a function to be triggered immediately, without security prompts or time-consuming confirmation. More than 95% of the functions used on a daily basis can be accessed directly via push-buttons. That was greatly appreciated by the operators. As was the fact that VÖGELE does without a film keyboard. Push-buttons on the consoles for paver operator and screwman can be operated quickly and reliably, even when wearing work gloves. Needless to say, that greatly improves ease of operation.”

The Highlights of ErgoPlus

  • Quick and easy to learn
  • Ergonomically designed operating consoles for fatigue-free working
  • Clear, logical arrangement of all paver functions
  • Convenient operation of paver functions by push-buttons
  • Easy handling of NIVELTRONIC Plus®, the new VÖGELE system for grade and
    slope control
  • Modular design of the paver operator’s console cuts service cost
  • Hardtop of glass fibre reinforced polymer material shelters operator whether
    rain or shine
  • Hardop folds up and down with effortless ease via manually operated hand pump

Self-explanatory operation thanks to ErgoPlus

Thanks to ErgoPlus, the paver can be operated intuitively. On the operator’s console, the push-buttons for paver functions are clustered into groups according to job site requirements. On the left-hand side of his console, the operator finds the buttons for conveyors and augers, in the middle those for the screed and on the right-hand side the controls for material hopper and steering. As self-explanatory symbols are used throughout, operators are put in a position to learn very quickly how ErgoPlus works. The push-buttons can be easily identified by touch and blindfold, which ensures reliable operation and avoids operator error.

Handling NIVELTRONIC Plus® is child’s play

Operation of NIVELTRONIC Plus® , the new system for grade and slope control, can be learned quickly and is child’s play, indeed. The display on the operating console guides screed operators easily and intuitively through the clear and logically structured menue. All major NVELTRONIC Plus® functions are located on menue level 1 for direct access. There is no easier way to achieve excellent paving results. Once the sensors for grade and slope control are connected, no further set-up is required. All sensors plugged in are recognized automatically by NIVELTRONIC Plus® . In addition to the radically simplified user interface of NIVELTRONIC® Plus, a number of other innovations have been realized to make the work simpler without any loss of functional diversity. Actual positions of the tow point rams, for instance, can not only be read off directly on the rams as usual, but also on the displays of both the screwman’s and the paver operator’s consoles.

270

Bright working lights are integrated into the hardtop flooding the job site with light for night-time work.

Hardtop gives shelter whether rain or shine

A new feature, too, is the hardtop of glass fibre reinforced polymer material. Not only does the hardtop look good, it also provides excellent shelter whether rain or shine. Wide sunshades can be extended on the right and on the left-hand sides giving the operator optimum protection even when his seat has been swivelled outwards. For transport, the hardtop folds down with effortless ease via a manually operated hydraulic pump. This reduces the new generation “dash 2” pavers’ transport height by 70cm.
