Paving Around One of Europe's Most Modern Football Arenas.

SUPER Paver Gets AufSchalke Arena Ready for the 2006 World Cup

Not only is Gelsenkirchen home to a first-class football team, it also boasts one of Europe's most modern football stadiums. The infrastructure around the "AufSchalke Arena" has now been completed - using road construction machines from VÖGELE and HAMM. The stadium needs to look its best, not least because it will be hosting the 2006 World Cup: four qualifying rounds and one quarter final are to be held here.

The new stadium of the German First Division team Schalke 04 is known as one of the most modern multi-functional stadiums in the world. With an extendable pitch, a closing roof and sliding grandstands, the stadium abounds with ingenious technical features which make it ideal for many other sports and cultural events.
The perfect infrastructure for the 2006 World Cup
Of course, the infrastructure around the AufSchalke Arena must also come up to scratch. Once the other buildings in the direct vicinity of the stadium - a rehab and health centre and a hotel - had been completed, construction of the access routes, parking areas and roads could get underway. German contractor Stüve Straßen- und Tiefbau from Damm opted to use a VÖGELE SUPER 1803-1 paver and a HAMM DV 70 tandem roller for performing the work.
Asphalt paved on an area of 10,000m2
Some of the new surfaces have been earmarked mainly as bus parking areas. There, the Stüve team built a three-layer pavement comprising 12cm thick base course (0/32), 8cm thick binder course (0/16) and 4cm thick wearing course (0/11) of asphaltic concrete. For the footpaths, combined base and wearing course (0/16) was paved 8cm thick. All in all, the Stüve team placed and compacted asphalt around the stadium over an area of 10,000m2.
Fast moving of the wheeled paver on site

As the car parks and paths do not form a single connected area, the paving team had to carry out paving work on ten sections. As a result, the machines frequently had to be moved between lanes and manoeuvred on site. Stüve therefore paved the areas with the new wheeled SUPER 1803-1 from VÖGELE. There were excellent reasons for this, as the Stüve paving team reports: "We are often paving directly on top of crushed stone. This is why we need an asphalt paver with sufficient traction. With its high tractive effort and all-wheel drive, the SUPER 1803-1 was the ideal candidate. In Gelsenkirchen, it was also important for us to have a machine which is easy and quick to move on site - and this works excellently with the SUPER 1803-1."

Cutting edge paver technology in operation
The power for the modern VÖGELE paver is supplied by a Perkins engine with a rating of 127 kW or 173 hp at 2,000 rpm. What's more, the paver's intelligent engine management ensures highly economical operation. Particularly in the ECO mode, which supplies sufficient power for most applications, the environmentally-friendly engine stands out through a remarkably low fuel consumption, extremely low noise emission and a very low level of wear.
Variable pave widths at the push of a button
On this job site, the convenient width adjustment of the AB 500 TV Extending Screed was in use on a regular basis, as the pave width varied between 5.5m and 6.5m. The screwman only needed to press a button for smooth and swift screed width control, thus producing perfect transitions. There was no need for any laborious manual work.
Convenient compaction with HAMM Roller
Behind the SUPER 1803-1, another of the WIRTGEN Group's star players was in action: a DV 70 tandem roller from HAMM, which has won another award for its successful design. Before this machine was launched into the market, roller drivers took it for granted that when "driving back" from the paver, they would have to either twist around in their seats or put up with the limited field of vision provided by the rear view mirror. These obstacles are a thing of the past for anyone using a roller from HAMM's DV series with its panoramic cabin. Initially, operating the ergonomically designed machine requires a mental adjustment. But all operators come to appreciate the advantage once they have changed directions a few times - a relaxed, healthy sitting position and a complete overview in the direction of travel at all times. And there is even an extra bonus: HAMM has integrated a speed control feature into the intelligent operating and steering system. As a result, the roller slows down and accelerates automatically and smoothly before and after turning. This avoids irregularities in the asphalt caused by excessive braking and considerably improves the evenness of the pavement surface.
DV 70 holds its own in practice
The glass cabin can also be extended far beyond the width of the machine. Especially when compacting the pavement's edge area, the ergonomic sitting position offers a greater overview, thus ensuring a better compacting result and a healthier posture for the roller operator. The Stüve team praised the free view of the drums offered by the new DV 70: "Thanks to the glass floor and open frame, you can always clearly see whether the drum is being sprayed with enough water and you can make sure that asphalt doesn't stick to it."
Professional consultation on site
To ensure that the questions that inevitably arise when new machines are used for the first time can be answered quickly and competently, WIRTGEN Hamburg, the WIRTGEN Group sales company and Stüve's partner, sent a service technician to Gelsenkirchen especially for this purpose. He was able to provide effective support for the operators with a number of invaluable tips.
A world-class paving result
In Gelsenkirchen, both the customer and the paving team were highly satisfied with the result of the work. And the many football fans will appreciate it when they arrive - be it for German First Division matches or the 2006 World Cup - and can park conveniently and walk from the car park to the stadium on neat asphalted paths.

The paving team from Stüve Straßen- und Tiefbau easily got to grips with the new HAMM and VÖGELE machines, right from the start. Nevertheless, the service technician delegated by WIRTGEN Hamburg was able to offer a number of invaluable tips on operation and maintenance of the new machines.
Backache no more: The roller operator has moved his glass-floored panoramic cabin beyond the width of the machine and positioned his seat at the edge of the cabin. He thus has an excellent view of the pavement edge while compacting the asphalt and can sit in a relaxed upright position.

The AB 500 Extending Screed in TV version was built up to a width of 6.5m with two bolt-on extensions for the "AufSchalke" job. The pave width could be set with millimetre accuracy to between 5.5m and 6.5m thanks to the screed's high-precision single-tube telescoping system.
From the VÖGELE paver's platform, the operator has an excellent overview of the job site. He can adjust his seat and control desk to the ideal settings for his height and stature using smooth operating elements. Incidentally, the operator of Stüve's paver much appreciated the convenient seat heating during the changeable April weather.
