Widening of the Huning Expressway.
SUPER 2100 C Relieves Main Traffic Artery in China
Great relief for the Jangtsekiang River delta: VÖGELE pavers, HAMM rollers and no less than 30 WIRTGEN cold milling machines participated in a widening scheme for the Huning Expressway running through the boom region which links Shanghai, the city of superlatives, and Nanjing. This busy 274km long traffic artery experiences an average growth in traffic volume of 30% every year which made widening of the expressway necessary from 4 to 8 lanes.

It is a huge road construction project in the east of China worth 1 billion euros. Jangsu Traffic Construction Co. Ltd, a semi-national road building company, carries out widening of the Huning Expressway over its total length. On this project a big fleet of WIRTGEN Group machinery are operating: 30 WIRTGEN milling machines do the milling job and VÖGELE pavers type SUPER 2100 C as well as a number of HAMM rollers participated in asphalt pavement construction.

Growth in traffic volume of 30% every year
This widening scheme became necessary despite the fact that new construction of the expressway dates back no further than 1996. The motorway between Shanghai and Nanjing is very busy and meanwhile carries 55,000 vehicles a day, heavy vehicles accounting for 20%. Every year, the traffic volume increases by some 30%. This is why the decision was taken for widening the carriageways from 4 to 8 lanes. Given an original total width of 26m, the motorway grows by 16.5m to a final width of 42.5m.
The Jangtsekiang River delta grows more and more
All those who once travelled along the 274km long route can see the Huning Expressway's importance clearly before their eyes. There are building sites everywhere. Shopping malls and industrial areas shoot up like mushrooms. The Jangtsekiang River delta is one of China's most developed regions in terms of economic growth. The Huning Expressway contributed substantially to this development. Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzou, Zhenjiang and Nanjing are six rising industrial centres located on the expressway like beads on a string. In view of its economic and social importance, the Huning Expressway is known among the Chinese as "The No. 1 Road of East China".
VÖGELE paver builds 12m wide pavement without joints
On one section of the Huning Expressway a VÖGELE SUPER 2100 C laid water-bound base. For a layer thickness between 18cm and 30cm, an operating speed between 2.5m and 4m per minute was selected. Jangsu Traffic Construction Co. Ltd. combined their paver with 2 screed types: at the beginning of the section an AB 575 Extending Screed in TP2 version was mounted to lay base in 9m width, then the paving team swaped screeds and used a SB 250 Fixed-Width Screed in TP1 version, built up with bolt-on extensions, to place base in 12m width.

High Compaction Technology provides for high bearing capacity
The supplement of TP1 or TP2 to the screed's type name is indication of its equipment with High Compaction Technology: ‚T' stands for tamper, the standard system for compaction, ‚P' means that 1 or 2 pressure bars are installed bringing about extra high pre-compaction. An enormous pressure is needed to achieve the high degree of density. In SUPER pavers, this pressure is generated by pulsed-flow hydraulics. This principle of operation is a VÖGELE innovation. All VÖGELE screeds equipped with HPC Technology allow the pressure for pressure bar(s) to be very finely regulated, so that this technology can be used even for placing thin layers. A flow-rate controller is installed on the screed for continuous pressure control between 40 and 130 bar. As a basic rule applies: the thicker your layer and the harder the mix is to compact, the higher the pressure to be selected for the pressure bar(s). As a result, VÖGELE HPC Technology allows even thick layers to be paved in a single pass and even thickest concrete or porous concrete pavements to be built in single-layer construction. While paving, the pressure bar(s) force the mix down to the limit until a maximum of density is reached. In other words, until an equilibrium is attained between the force exerted by the pressure bar(s) and the counterforce by the compacted mix. This allows not only to obtain a maximum of profile accuracy and evenness, but also to pave highly economically. The calculation is simple: the higher the density produced by the paver, the less extra compaction is needed by rolling. But VÖGELE HPC screeds with pressure bar(s) also do an excellent job on projects where, for technical or economical reasons, compaction by rolling is not recommended.
Perfect pre-compaction
Also when placing water-bound base, HPC Technology displays its strong points. Jangsu Traffic Construction Co. Ltd, the Chinese building company, confirmed the prime quality results: "Surface texture and evenness are excellent and fully meet the Chinese specifications for motorway construction". To the excellent final result also contributed HAMM 3520 HT single-drum vibrating compactors, which brought about the high density of the water-bound base in only a few passes.
