  High-speed Rehabilitation of Rural Road

Contract for “Compact Asphalt Pavement”: Rehabilitation of carriageway on the L 107 rural road near Bersenbrück, Lower Saxony, Germany

Job Description

Reconstruction was carried out with the road closed for traffic. Therefore, it was of great importance for the roadworks to progress rapidly, so that the road could be opened to traffic again as soon as possible. In this context, “hot on hot” paving was a major advantage: as binder and surface courses were placed in a single pass, the paving job could be completed in just four working days. Paving according to the conventional method would have taken twice as long. On the straight sections, a crown of 2.5% was set and a slope of 3.5% on the bends. Paving this profile was no problem at all for the InLine Pave® machines used on the job.

New Construction of Highway with Several Bridges

Contract for “Compact Asphalt Pavement”: New construction of the B 178 (n) federal highway near Löbau, Saxony, Germany

Job Description

Several bridge structures were located along the highway. On some of the bridges, hot mix needed to be placed, too, however only 4cm surface course on mastic asphalt.

That paving on the bridge decks was possible at all was due to a unique advantage offered by the VÖGELE InLine Pave® concept. Thanks to the paving train’s modular design, the MT 1000-1 IP Mobile Feeder and the SUPER 2100-2 IP paver for binder course could stop working and pass over the bridge, leaving the paver for surface course behind. This paver placed surface course in the required thickness of 4cm and in the conventional manner on the bridge deck. After the bridge, the entire InLine Pave® train resumed work and continued paving “hot on hot”.

On other stretches of the B 178 (n) highway, the pavers were not allowed to access the bridges, as construction work had not yet been completed. In these places, too, the modular InLine Pave® concept displayed its unique advantage. Every single machine of the InLine Pave® train was able to leave the highway by travelling down the embankment, without any prior conversion, and by-pass the bridge. As an InLine Pave® team, they resumed work right after the bridge.

Tests were also conducted to show how deep the paver for surface course sank into the binder course. The sinking depth was between 0.3 and 0.8cm, resulting in an average of 0.65cm. The imprints left by the paver had no adverse effects upon the asphalt pavement’s quality.

The Bautzen Authorities for Road Construction letting the contract and represented by civil engineer Jürgen Israel, accepted the pavement without objection.

  “Two-layer Paving” on Tight Bends

Contract for “Compact Asphalt Pavement”: Rehabilitation of carriageway on the K 1155 rural road near Ochtmersleben, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Job Description

The existing K 1155 is a winding road and some of the bends are really tight. But thanks to the VÖGELE InLine Pave® concept, it was no problem at all to carry out the roadworks by paving two layers “hot on hot”. This was possible due to the compact sizes of the two pavers SUPER 2100-2 IP and SUPER 1600-1 used on the contract. “Hot on hot” paving could be handled easily even on hairpin bends. On these sections, the machines of the InLine Pave® train just worked at slightly larger distances from one another.
