Roundabout Construction

Without Closing Roads to Traffic

Building Site:

The crossing point of two roads at Reilingen in the Federal state of Baden was an accident blackspot. To relieve the situation, road construction authorities of Heidelberg let a contract for construction of a roundabout with three access points to Klaus Reimold GmbH based at Gemmingen. Given the large volume of traffic at these crossroads the roundabout had to be built without closing the roads to traffic.

Geometry:
Outer Radius 8.5m; Inner Radius 5.5m

Construction:
The roundabout was built in half-road width by paving two 3.25m wide strips. Paving was done from the inside to the outside. The paver worked without bolt-on extensions fitted, so it could do even the smallest detail at the access points of the existing roads. The tack coat spread on the base did not affect the paver’s tractive effort when passed over.

Mix:
Classical design of an asphalt road pavement with a total thickness of 22cm: 10cm base course (grain size 0/32), 8cm binder course (grain size 0/16), 4cm wearing course (grain size 0/11 CS 50/70).

Paver:
VÖGELE SUPER 1900 with AB 500 Extending Screed in TV version. Installed on the paver was the VÖGELE NIVELTRONIC Automated Grade and Slope Control System. During base course construction, a sonic sensor was used for grade control and a slope sensor for the crossfall.
