A VÖGELE SUPER 1900 with AB 575 Extending Screed in TP1 Version on a Building Site at Hockenheim.

The Giant Chelsea Bun

Building Site:

Next to the racing track at Hockenheim, Germany, drivers are testing their ability in the traffic safety centre. A contract was let by the ADAC (German Automobile Club) and Motodrom-Besitz GmbH for a roundabout to be constructed on their land so that in future drivers can pick up a trick or two during driving safety training.

Geometry:
Outer Radius 36m; Inner Radius 4m
Slope: 1.5 %towards the outside

Construction:
The roundabout is so enormous that 7 strips were required and, as such, German contractor Bickhardt Bau AG decided on the spiral construction, which allows a homogeneous and high-quality circular surface to be built. A wedge-type starting point had to be paved first. Starting from this wedge, a VÖGELE SUPER 1900 paved the roundabout just like a “Chelsea Bun” – without a stop from the inside to the outside. This kind of paving prevents joints, which would have been inevitable had paving been carried out in closed circles.

Mix:
100 kg/m² of fine-graded asphaltic concrete (grain size 0/8).

Paver:
VÖGELE SUPER 1900 with AB 575 Extending Screed in TP1 version. Pave speed was 4m/min., the pressure bar operated at 50bar, the tamper was set to 30% of its maximum speed. In order to optimize turning of the radius, steering was by potentiometer. Two HAMM DVO 6 rollers followed for extra compaction by rolling.
