SUPER 1800-3i – A Paver Full of Pioneering Ideas

Named after the French winner of the 1968 Nobel Peace Prize, the winding and in some places narrow Rue René Cassin leads through the small town of La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Traffic on the Rue René Cassin is heavy, for the town’s historic centre attracts numerous visitors each year. The surface course had to be rehabilitated speedily in order to minimize the nuisance to traffic. The Groupe Cheval paving team grew increasingly enamoured with the powerful yet compact VÖGELE SUPER 1800-3i with each successive metre paved. Not only did the numerous ergonomic highlights of the “Dash 3” generation improve the safety of the operators, they also ensured a virtually uninterrupted paving process.

The requirement that everything should proceed smoothly and without breaks, despite the continuing flow of traffic, is typical of such town-centre road construction projects as the one in La Voulte-sur-Rhône. This requires a continuous supply of material on the one hand and a highly manœuvrable paver on the other to master the bends and narrows just as easily as the straight sections, squares and roundabouts. Machines of the SUPER 1800 class from VÖGELE are legendary all-rounders in town. Yet the new “Dash 3” generation has raised the bar once more, also as regards their ergonomic design.

For the “Dash 3” generation, the VÖGELE ErgoPlus operating system has been supplemented by numerous technical and functional features. For the contractor Groupe Cheval, ErgoPlus 3 was therefore also one of the decisive reasons prompting them to purchase two SUPER 1800-3i pavers from VÖGELE. One of these machines impressed not only the paver operator and screed operator, but also the driver of the feed lorry when rehabilitating the surface course of the winding road in La Voulte-sur-Rhône.

Outstanding operating concept

The optimized ErgoPlus 3 operating concept focuses even more strongly on the operator. As a result, this impressive machine and its technology can be controlled more easily and intuitively. At the same time, ErgoPlus 3 assures a more comfortable and safer workplace for the operator. He now has an excellent view of all the paver’s most important points.

Designed for optimum clarity, the paver operator’s console presents all functions in logical groups. The operator can now react even more quickly and more effectively to the work processes and circumstances unfolding on his job site, retaining full control over the machine and project in all situations. The new high-contrast colour display with excellent legibility, even in poor lighting, naturally contributes to this.

Operation of the screed has also been improved. A handy rotary controller known as the “SmartWheel” permits infinite and precise screed width control to take account of changes in the routing of the road, for instance where it narrows, along walls or kerbs.

Special highlight: “PaveDock Assistant”

The new “PaveDock Assistant” was particularly highly commended. It greatly simplifies the transfer of material from lorry to paver. This is achieved through a means of communication that precludes all misunderstandings – coloured signal lights!

Signal lights on the paver and the associated controls on the paver operator’s ErgoPlus 3 console are key components of the “PaveDock Assistant”. The paver has two signal lights mounted on the right and left-hand sides of the hardtop where they can easily be seen by the lorry driver. With these lights, the paver operator can indicate to the lorry driver exactly which actions are needed: reverse, dock, stop, raise dump box, lower dump box and move away. This ensures that the lorry driver cannot miss a single instruction, regardless of the level of noise and position of the lorry.

David Far, Site Manager at Groupe Cheval, also sees further advantages: “Thanks to the ‘PaveDock Assistant’, we no longer need a man between paver and lorry.”

That is safer for the men on the ground – and the paver operator no longer has to shout and gesticulate to make the lorry driver understand what is wanted of him. That is much appreciated by everyone in La Voulte-sur-Rhône. Both paver operators and lorry drivers found this was a great idea!
